Subject: gus-midi connector --> why 2 inverters??
why would the circuit for a midi connector use 2 inverters?
Is there some reason for this, or was it just designed by someone who
didn't know much about electronics?
I would have thought using a buffer (74LS241 will do, from memory) to rpl
the two inverters would be much better, since it would be faster!
any reason why this would not be the case?

Ok here's my good news - the MIDI circuit I have had trouble with
and GUS UART I thought I had blown has been solved
Thanks to all of you who replied and thanks to Phat who recommened
something simple but it worked. Yet Phat I have rev 3.4 so I
guess that was good news as well - but apparently if you
run ULTRAJOY you get no midi it locks the port so
that was the problem - it reportsno SB/MIDI irq. Well anyway now
its solved and working 100%
I have some information I would like to share with all those builing
a midi circuit that I think should go into the FAQ if the author hears
this ...
I used a 6N137 opto isolator - with some changes:
^^^^^
- You must connect (short out) pins 7 and 8 of the 6N137
- Take out the 270ohm resistor it is not needed and is only
used for the 6N138 - it causes too much noise and you
receive garbage from the midi keyboard
Thats it - thanks again to everyone who helped
James

Just outa curiosity... you didn't have SBOS or anything like that loaded when
you ran SETGUS?? If you do it will give you Timeout error (learned that the
hard way after several hours of swapping cards in and out of the comouter and
playing with several jumpers :) )
